Jagannath comes into the public way, making darshan available beyond the temple interior.
The temple doors open.
The journey begins.
Ratha Yatra brings Jagannath, Baladeva and Subhadra into public procession—an immense expression of darshan, service and shared joy.
Confirm your city’s procession date.
ISKCON Bangalore lists Jagannatha Ratha Yatra on Thursday, July 16, 2026, following the Puri festival date. Its Thanisandra program was scheduled separately on July 24.
Global events frequently use a different weekend. Confirm the route, start time, weather policy, accessibility and transport with the local organizer.
From Sri Mandira to Gundicha.
Ratha Yatra originates in Jagannath Puri, Odisha. Ritual names, sequence and access rules belong to that living temple tradition; this overview is an orientation, not a procedural manual.
- 01
Public darshan
Jagannath, Baladeva and Subhadra emerge from the temple and are brought ceremonially toward their chariots.
- 02
Humble service
The traditional sweeping before the chariots expresses that social rank is secondary to service.
- 03
The journey to Gundicha
The chariots travel from the main temple toward Gundicha Temple, accompanied by singing, instruments and vast crowds.
- 04
A stay in the garden temple
The deities remain at Gundicha before the return journey, known as Bahuda Yatra.
Drawing the beloved toward Vrindavan.
In Gaudiya Vaishnava reflection, the procession carries the mood of Radha and Krishna’s devotees longing to bring him from the royal setting of Dvaraka back to the intimate forests of Vraja.
Pulling, sweeping, singing, cooking and organizing become shared forms of seva.
The chariot’s movement gives visible form to the heart’s desire for closeness with Krishna.
Prepare for movement, weather and crowds.
A festival route is not a normal temple visit. Read the organizer’s full advisory and plan how your group will arrive, remain together and leave.
- 01BEFORE
Check the route
Review road closures, transit, parking, start and finish locations, weather updates and the event’s bag policy.
- 02ARRIVAL
Set a meeting point
Choose a visible location away from the chariot path and share emergency contact information.
- 03PROCESSION
Follow stewards
Remain behind barriers and obey volunteers, security and local authorities. Never cross directly before a moving chariot.
- 04PARTICIPATION
Pull only when invited
Use designated ropes and sections. Do not wrap rope around a hand, arm, body, stroller or mobility device.
- 05AFTER
Exit patiently
Expect congestion at the end. Hydrate, account for every member of your group and use the agreed departure plan.
Darshan never requires unsafe proximity.
Large processions involve heavy moving structures, ropes, uneven roads, heat and crowd pressure. Keep distance whenever conditions feel uncertain.
Never stand in the path, touch wheels, climb the vehicle, pass beneath structures or enter restricted operating areas.
Carry permitted water, use sun and rain protection, take breaks and leave early if severe weather or heat symptoms develop.
Keep hands free, avoid bottlenecks and move diagonally toward an outer edge if crowd density becomes uncomfortable.
Locate first aid on arrival. Carry essential medication and medical information according to your normal care plan.
Six accessible forms of seva.

One journey, many local expressions.
Puri, Odisha
The historic festival uses three distinct chariots and follows a detailed temple calendar. Visitors should rely on official local authorities for routes, access and crowd controls.
Gaudiya Vaishnava meaning
The journey is often contemplated as the devotees of Vrindavan drawing Krishna back from royal Dvaraka into the intimate love of Vraja.
ISKCON worldwide
A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada helped establish Ratha Yatra celebrations internationally. City events adapt procession length, chariot scale and scheduling.
Local temple festivals
Some communities hold Ratha Yatra on the lunar date; others use a suitable weekend. The organizer’s announcement is the final practical guide.
Participation should not depend on walking the full route.
Ask organizers about viewing areas, seating, toilets, shade, quiet spaces and accessible transport before the event.
Use designated viewing points rather than crowding ramps, curb cuts or the procession corridor.
Keep children within reach, away from ropes and wheels, and give them identification and caregiver details appropriate to the venue.
Drums, amplification and crowds can be intense. Consider hearing protection, a quieter viewing point and a clear exit plan.
Temple darshan, livestreams, kirtan, reading, prasadam service and donations can all be meaningful when the route is inaccessible.
